A circle with center/centre the origin of a Cartesian coordinate system. The labels x squared plus y squared equals one and pi equals integral between minus one and one start fraction one over square root of one minus x squared end fraction dx are next to the circle.

In the Cartesian coordinates, the equation of the circle of radius 1 and center/centre in the Origin is:

x2+y2=1x^2+y^2=1

The arc length of the top half (or bottom half) of the unit circle is given by the integral:

π=1111x2dx\pi=\int_{-1}^{1}{\frac{1}{\sqrt{1-x^2}}\, \mathrm{d}x}

An integral such this was adopted as the definition of pi by Karl Weierstrass.
